Dental implants can be used to replace missing teeth as well as keep a denture securely in place. While titanium implants are still the most common option for this procedure, ceramic implants are slowly becoming the go-to for many patients. Ceramic implants, which are also known as zirconia implants, are made using biocompatible ceramic material. This helps in creating a bright white implant that is durable, long-lasting and aesthetically-pleasing.
Why would Zirconia Implants be needed?
Ceramic dental implants are the same size and shape as titanium implants. The main difference between these implants and titanium restorations is that they're made using a different material and are white rather than metallic. Many patients opt for ceramic implants if they are trying to avoid using metal in their dental restorations. Others choose this option because it is more aesthetically-pleasing since it is bright white rather than silver. Ceramic implants go through osseointegration the same as any other implant, which means that your bone will naturally fuse with the implant over the course of several months.

How Long Will Zirconia Implants Last?
Zirconia implants are still relatively new to the dental field and are not as widely used as titanium implants. However, despite still being considered a new technology, they are durable and incredibly long-lasting. For many patients, they have their ceramic implants in place for decades with great use. In order for ceramic implants to be deemed permanent, they must be given time to fuse with the underlying bone of the jaw. This ensures that the implant is solidly in place and will not become loose or break. Zirconia is considered to be one of the strongest materials available, so it is no surprise that many patients are choosing ceramic implants over titanium.
What Can You Expect During the Zirconia Implant Procedure?
You will first come in for a consultation as well as special imaging. This allows us to see if you would benefit from dental implants and if ceramic implants are right for you. Patients who are suffering from bone loss may need a bone graft done prior to the procedure itself. We will then insert the implant deep into the bone and check it every few months to ensure it is bonding with the surrounding bone. A new crown or denture is then made for you to fit the restoration.
